QR code business cards: how to choose a vCard or link
Learn whether a business card QR code should contain a vCard or a website link, what details to include and how to test it before printing.Written by Qraffe · Updated September 22, 2026 · 4 min readChoose the right destination first
Use a vCard QR code when the main goal is to let someone save your name, phone number, email and company details. Use a URL QR code when you want to send people to a portfolio, booking page or contact page.
A static vCard is useful when the details are unlikely to change. A URL can point to a page you maintain, so the information behind the same address can change without reprinting the card. If the URL itself changes, you need a new QR code.
Keep the content focused
Include the details a new contact needs first: your name, role, company, phone number, email address and website. Leave out information that does not help someone contact you. Extra content makes the QR pattern denser, which matters on a small printed card.
Check spelling, country codes and the website address before you generate the final code. A QR code can scan perfectly while still leading to an incorrect destination.
Design for the printed card
Give the code enough clear space. Do not place it against the trim edge, a busy pattern or small text. Use a dark foreground on a light background and avoid making the code so small that a phone must be held uncomfortably close to scan it.
If you add a logo or rounded modules, test the final output after every design change. The version that matters is the version people receive, not a large preview on your screen.
Test the save flow
Print a proof at the intended card size. Scan it with more than one phone and check the actual result: the contact fields should be recognisable, the phone number should be correct and the website should open. Different camera and contact apps can present vCard details differently.
Keep a second way to reach you on the card. A visible email address or website helps when a phone cannot scan the code.
